The wind off the Sea of Japan bites sharp and clean, a constant reminder I’m a long way from the fluorescent hum of a corporate office. Last time, I laid out why I traded that life for the raw, demanding embrace of Hokkaido’s wilderness. It wasn’t a whim; it was a reckoning. Now, you’re probably wondering: where exactly did I land, and who’s sharing this wild ride with me? This isn’t just a story about a place; it’s about the ground under my boots, the creatures that share my days, and the quiet rhythm we’re carving out, photo by photo.

💡 Key Takeaways
  • Reclaiming wild land is a humbling, adventurous journey.
  • Homesteading companions, like chickens, are vital partners, not just livestock.
  • The simple warmth of a fresh-laid egg redefines true abundance.
  • Witnessing new life, like hatching chicks, grounds you in the cycle of nature.

The Ground Beneath My Feet: Two Hectares of Wild Promise

This is it. The stage for my grand experiment, this raw patch of Hokkaido earth. It stretches out, about two chō – nearly five acres – and if I’m honest, I’ve barely scratched the surface of understanding it. Decades ago, farmers worked this soil, turning it over for crops. Now, nature has roared back with a vengeance.

Endless green under a vast Hokkaido sky. This is my field, my canvas.

I wade through grass taller than my head, pushing through tangles of brush, and every step feels like an uncharted expedition. This wild, untamed canvas, with its rich, dark soil, is slowly but surely going to transform. My hands, and the paws and claws of my companions, will coax food from it. You’ll see every blistered step of that transformation right here.

Left untended, nature reclaims with fierce abundance. Facing that reality is my daily work.

My Crew: The Unsung Partners of Ketch Homestead

Out here, you don’t just live on the land; you live with it. And you live with your crew. These aren’t just animals; they’re the heartbeat of this homestead, my indispensable partners in this wild, off-grid dance.

The Clucking Crew: My Feathered Farmhands

Right now, we’ve got about thirty birds, big and small, scratching and clucking their way through the days. Calling them ‘livestock’ feels too cold. They’re more like the liveliest, most productive roommates you could ask for, true partners in this self-sufficient life.

Inside the chicken coop.
Mother hens patiently waiting their turn in the nesting boxes. Every day, I’m grateful.

Every single morning, those eggs are a testament to their hard work and a pure, unadulterated blessing. Forget those pale, watery things from the store. These are deep, rich yolks, full of the flavor of a life lived free, a taste of pure, vital energy.

Today’s harvest. That warmth in your hand? That’s the proof of life.

And some of these clucking characters? I hatched them myself, right here. There’s something profoundly humbling, a deep, quiet joy, in witnessing a new life peck its way out of a shell, right in your own hands. It’s moments like those that remind you why you traded the corporate hum for the chirping of chicks.

Tiny bundles of new life, pecking their way into the world.
